Drug-Eluting
Stents: Recorded on: Healthcare providers
find themselves in a constant tug-of-war between providing quality care
and managing costs. This struggle is often greatest during the introduction
of new technologies. It is predicted that by 2005, the use of these stents
could reduce surgery by almost 50%, cause significant reductions of medical
therapy, and increase the frequency of intervention procedures for coronary
artery disease. Although the use of drug-eluting stents brings promise
of improved outcomes for cardiology patients, it also poses an economic
impact. For example, cardiologists must be aware of the high cost of these
devices and the impact of their use on the patient's financial and medical
insurance resources. These events are produced in partnership with SCAI and MEBN.net and are free for SCAI members thanks to a generous grant from Pfizer. |
